An Office With a Great View by Bill Watanabe

Thoughts on Timing and Giving

Mr. and Mrs. Nagata owned a 5-unit apartment building that provided some rental income for them but also required more and more up-keep as the building got older. About 12 years ago, the Nagata's set up a planned gift called a Charitable Remainder Trust where the real estate was sold and the money placed into the trust.   The trust provided a little income, but also provided for future inheritance gifts for the children and any left-over (or "remainder") funds after their passing would be donated to LTSC.

When the Nagata's set up their Trust in 1999, the stock market was booming and the federal budget had a surplus!   Little did the Nagata's know that the donation from their trust would come to LTSC at a time when the economy was still reeling from the Great Recession, and many nonprofits were struggling to survive.

Last month, LTSC received over $150,000 from the Trust -  one of the largest non-capital gifts in our history!   According to the trust attorney, "The donors were hard-working and had little time for philanthropy while raising their family - but in the end, their trust made a significant philanthropic gift!"

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches.

20 Years of Saving Lives …the Miracle Continues

A3M’s work remains a vital component in ensuring that patients find their matches and receive life-saving marrow or blood cell transplants to treat leukemia, aplastic anemia and other diseases.

Since 1991, A3M has conducted over 7,000 drives to provide education to communities and to recruit more than 200,000 potential donors.  Many of these donors have come up as matches, giving hope to patients and their families year after year. Today, A3M also provides Culturally Appropriate Patient Support Services (CAPSS) to patients in the languages they understand.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

Back to School: Miguel’s Honor Roll

Miguel was 9 months old when his family moved into Casa Heiwa, LTSC’s affordable housing community in Little Tokyo.  When he was 6 years old he started coming downstairs to the After-School Learning Center to work on homework and use the computers. “But we can’t use the computers until we finish our homework,” Miguel explains. The youngest of three boys, now 13, Miguel attends middle school in Lincoln Heights.  This past school year Miguel made the Honor Roll for having over a 3.5 grade point average. Miguel says he worked really hard last year even staying after school to get extra help from teachers.  “It feels good to earn the Honor Roll medal and I am proud that my parents are happy,” Miguel says. Miguel’s favorite subjects are History and English and when he is not studying he’s playing basketball and soccer just for fun.  “I like the After-school program here, it’s fun and I enjoy it.  Nancy (After-School Program Director) is a cool person and is always proud of me,” Miguel says.  So are we Miguel.  Congratulations!

Help LTSC Make a Difference

Bank of America Charitable Foundation: Helping to Create Community

Most of the affordable housing LTSC develops is through a program we call the Affordable Housing Collaborative. Through it, LTSC partners with other nonprofit, community-based organizations to help them build multifamily affordable housing projects that serve their communities.

LTSC recently received a grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Inc. to support our work to build affordable housing in these low-income ethnic enclaves that have traditionally served as entry points, providing jobs, business opportunities and housing to new immigrants and low-income households.  Many residents in these neighborhoods are forced to live in substandard housing, in overcrowded units and to pay unaffordable rent levels. In addition, gentrification and the growing rate of foreclosures, now threaten the vitality of these neighborhoods.

LTSC would like to thank the Bank of America Foundation for its support of our work to build community assets, like affordable housing, that bring stability to Los Angeles’ low income communities.
