Action Super Heroes
LTSC sponsors a program called "Konnichiwa Little Tokyo" which in English would mean something like "Hello Little Tokyo". This volunteer-run program brings disadvantaged youth to Little Tokyo and introduce them to the culture of Little Tokyo. Most of these youth are from foster-care programs and it is a tremendous joy to see them soaking up and learning about Japanese taiko drum-playing, making origami figures, and enjoying mochi ice cream.
One of the take-aways that each young person receives in their goodie-bag (among many items generously donated by businesses in Little Tokyo) is a very special gift from a man named Stan Lee (in this case, not an Asian name). Many of these kids don't have any material possessions of any value but an autographed comic book by the legendary Stan Lee is a most-prized possession for anyone!
Stan Lee is the creator/co-creator of many famous action heroes and figures such as Captain America, Spiderman, The Hulk, Fantastic 4, Iron Man, and X-Men. He has personally autographed 200 Marvel Comic books to be given to each child who participates in the Konnichiwa Little Tokyo program - an act that makes him a super-hero in my (comic) book! Many thanks to all the great people who work hard to put on the Konnichiwa Little Tokyo program for youth and to Stan Lee for taking time to help these kids! |

| LTSC and API Dementia Care Network Receives the Prestigious Caregiving Legacy Award |
As a key participant in a multi-agency collaboration led by the Alzheimer's Association, LTSC and its partners in the API Dementia Care Network (APIDCN) received the prestigious "Caregiving Legacy Award" by the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation and the Family Caregiver Alliance.
In a nationwide competition, APIDCN, one of only four groups to be recognized as innovators in the advancement of caregiving for Alzheimer's disease, was singled out for its culturally sensitive approach to overcoming stigma and effective strategies for assisting caregivers, including bilingual materials for outreach, knowledge of ethnic community resources, and culturally appropriate direct services for family caregivers in the language they speak. |
|
LTSC also assists family caregivers through the Caregiver Registry referral system, caregiver training workshops and conferences, spousal caregiver intervention and case management. |
|
| Archstone Foundation Helps LTSC Address Depression in Older Adults |
A multi-ethnic collaboration led by LTSC was awarded $147,555 by Archstone Foundation to integrate depression awareness and management into existing case management services provided to older adults. By using Healthy IDEAS (Identifying Depression,Empowering Activities for Seniors), an evidence-based program which ensures older adults get the help they need to manage symptoms of depression, social workers at LTSC will work with Chinatown Service Center (CSC), Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC), Young Nak Outreach & Transformation (YNOT) Foundation and Cambodian Seniors Nutrition Program (CSNP) to provide assessments and interventions for older adults to enrich their lives. This is the first time this case management model will be implemented together in four Asian American communities--Cambodian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean American.
