Little
Tokyo Service Center News - September 2010 |
| An Office With a Great View by Bill Watanabe |
There was a recent Time Magazine article which questioned whether summer vacation was detrimental to student's learning retention. Apparently, during the lazy days of summer, if a student is unengaged in continued learning activities, they not only don't learn new things, they forget a large amount of what they had learned during the previous school year! This is especially true for students who may not be able to afford summer enrichment activities - or take exotic vacations to learn and experience new things.

LTSC has been assisting a new venture initiated by an energetic Japanese TV personality named Saki Miata of JATV. Saki came to us last year and said she wanted to start a culture-learning experience for kids in foster group homes who often don't have opportunities for learning experiences during the summer lull. She rolled up her sleeves and plunged ahead with her idea, and we helped develop an itinerary of taking groups of foster kids to the Japanese American National Museum, and to Japanese Village Plaza for mochi ice cream and a Japanese-style lunch.
The summer of 2010 is almost over and close to 170 youth have experienced this one-day culture camp in Little Tokyo. We are proud and happy to have partnered with an amazing lady with a big heart to make sure that summer is not a lost-season of learning. A big "thank you" to Saki Miata and her great crew of volunteers! |

| How Your Support Makes a Difference |
|
Champion Donuts is located in the city of Sun Valley, California. The shop is operated by Mr. Sompong Pornthepsiripong, his wife and son. Sompong called the Asian Pacific Islander Small Business Program WBC (API SBP) in July 2009 for assistance in applying for a business loan. He was seeking a $10,000 loan to expand his business. The entire amount of the loan would be used to purchase new equipment. API SBP’s business counselor helped him apply for a loan through Superior Financial Group. An SBA Community Express loan was obtained for $7,500. The small loan allowed the shop owner to remain open thus preserving three jobs and two more positions may be created in 2010. Mr. Pornthepsiripong had not previously applied for an SBA loan.
Our business counselor who is fluent in Thai has used his language skills to assist numerous lower income immigrant entrepreneurs to become “self-employed” and to create jobs for others. |
