Straight Outta Little Tokyo Draws Strong Support for BUDOKAN

On June 4, more than 600 people packed into Nishi Hongwanji Los Angeles Betsuin Temple for Straight Outta Little Tokyo, an old school hip-hop-themed dance fundraiser for BUDOKAN. Celebrating Japanese Americans' integral connections to the 80's and 90's West Coast hip-hop scene, the fundraiser was a throwback to the JA social scene of that time, much of it concentrated in Little Tokyo. Building BUDOKAN now is more important than ever. With rapid developments happening in and around Little Tokyo, BUDOKAN will serve as more than just a gathering space for community, but as a Home Court for All future generations.

Funder Spotlight: Cathay Bank

Cathay Bank generously supports LTSC’s Financial Capability and Asset Building program that provides financial literacy education to the residents living in our affordable housing and the neighboring community. Residents, including youth, attend workshops and have access to one-on-one counseling to learn how to keep a household budget, reduce debt and increase savings. Some residents are even developing long-term plans to buy their own homes. Thank you Cathay Bank for your belief in this important program!

Engaging Seniors with Art

To celebrate Older Americans Month in May, our ArtPlace staff collaborated with girls from Las Fotos project, who are also tenants in our affordable housing in Angelino Heights, to photograph seniors in Little Tokyo. Seniors participated in audio interviews with staff to share stories about their life and experiences here in Little Tokyo. It was wonderful multi-cultural and multi-generational exchange with the arts!
