Grant Spotlight:

Wells Fargo Foundation

LTSC recently received a grant from Wells Fargo Foundation to support our Affordable Housing Collaborative.

LTSC’s Affordable Housing Collaborative works with community organizations throughout Los Angeles to help them build affordable housing in their low-income neighborhoods. The Collaborative has a strong track record and has partnered with over 15 community-based organizations to build 24 projects with 844 units of affordable housing.

The Collaborative is currently working on affordable housing projects that will create affordable rental housing in several Los Angeles’ neighborhoods including Arts District, Historic Filipinotown, Little Tokyo, Koreatown and Cornfield Arroyo Seco. LTSC also recently purchased the Daimaru Hotel in Little Tokyo to preserve affordable housing on Historic First Street.

LTSC wishes to thank Wells Fargo Foundation for its continuing support of LTSC and our efforts to provide affordable housing for families, individuals and seniors in Los Angeles.

BoLA News: $500,000 from Keck Foundation

In December 2015, the W.M. Keck Foundation awarded a $500,000 grant to LTSC for its Budokan of Los Angeles project.  Funding will support construction costs for the Little Tokyo Service Center’s Budokan of Los Angeles project, which is a multi-purpose recreation facility with a roof-top park in Little Tokyo, near Downtown Los Angeles.

"I would like to thank the W.M. Keck Foundation for their support of the Budokan project and for their recognition on the importance of expanding recreational opportunities in the Downtown area," said Dean Matsubayashi, Executive Director of Little Tokyo Service Center. “As one of the first major foundations to support our project, this investment is a testament to and a belief in the need for a facility like the Budokan of Los Angeles in Downtown Los Angeles.  It also indicates that they share in our vision and are confident in LTSC’s ability to complete a project of this scale.”

Monkey Year

2015 has marked 35 years of LTSC making positive change for people and places, starting with our own home in Little Tokyo and broadening out to Southern California.

Thank you for a wonderful year!

We look forward to continuing our mission to make positive change for people and places with your support in 2016!

Here's to another year of service!

A Story Of Positive Change: Takai San

On December 29 we said farewell to Yoshiko Takai (Takai San), our longest living resident at the San Pedro Firm Building. She lived there since 1955 when she worked for a sewing school and then for the Flower Market.

The City eventually became the owner and Takai San joined with her neighbors to became a militant resident when the City began to try and vacate the building by letting it fall into disrepair. They finally shut off the hot water forcing folks to vacate the rooms padlocking the units behind them.

Takai San along with other tenants were instrumental in going to the City Council to demand better conditions. When she moved back in after the LTSC rehab in 1990s, she literally jumped for joy clasping both hands together at how nice the place became.

It has been an honor to serve her. We miss her more than words.
