The Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) is looking for an experienced entrepreneurial person to join our organization to provide business counseling services to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in Los Angeles County with a focus on Little Tokyo. LTSC is a medium size nonprofit organization with over 120 staff employees. It has been creating “positive change for people and places” for over 38 years and provides a supportive family-oriented environment for its staff as well as the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of over 10,000 served by its programs and services each year.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Small Business Counselor is responsible for providing technical assistance to small business clients in Little Tokyo and the broader Japanese American community. These activities are funded by, and part of, the Asian Pacific Islander Small Business Program (API SBP), a collaborative including LTSC and four other nonprofit agencies. The Small Business Counselor works under the supervision of LTSC management, and would also coordinate his/her work with the API SBP Director and staff of the collaborating agencies. Activities with individual small business clients include outreach, assessment techniques, providing generalized business counseling and technical assistance, linking clients with more specialized consultants for specific needs through the API SBP program, building relationships with Little Tokyo businesses, and follow-up and support activities. The Business Counselor is expected to assist new and existing businesses in developing their business plans, obtain licenses and permits, loan applications and other types of business assistance. The Business Counselor is expected to develop and coordinate program events such as training programs, workshops, expos and fairs. Occasional weekends and late evenings are required for conducting business-related workshops and seminars. The Business Counselor is also involved in community-wide business development and marketing strategies. The Business Counselor is a part of LTSC’s Community Economic Development staff and will work with the small business sector in Little Tokyo, contributing to LTSC’s overall strategy for its work in Little Tokyo. The Business Counselor is expected to meet all reporting requirements in a timely manner.

Requirements:

Candidate must be able to work effectively independently as well as in a team. He/she must be a self-starter and always be conscious of what would be best for the agency and its clients as a whole. Candidate must possess excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work with a wide range of culturally diverse people including staff, clients, media, funders, elected officials and others.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years managing or operating a small business, and/or experience in either public or nonprofit economic development/business assistance programs and/or business development in the private sector.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree; graduate degree in Business or related field preferred; an MBA would be a plus but is not required.
  • Strong general business knowledge including areas such as finance, marketing, operations.
  • Strong initiative, ability to develop projects from the ground up and work independently.
  • A good sense of humor and creative problem solving abilities.
  • California driver license and access to an insured automobile.
  • Fluency in Japanese is preferred; experience with and/or understanding of cultural nuances of Japanese/Japanese American business owners is preferred.
